Anil K. Lalwani, MD

Welcome to Student Research at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University! Research drives discovery, innovation, and interventions to eradicate disease and improve human health. At VP&S, research and discovery are an important part of our mission. We have a long history of groundbreaking research in medicine and health sciences. As a top 10 NIH funded medical school, research at Columbia is notable for outstanding faculty, depth and breadth of research, and a research infrastructure that enables cutting edge research. Leveraging our strengths, we are committed to student learning and participation in inquiry and discovery. Participation in research and discovery during medical school is critical to the development of the physician as a clinician, scientist and educator.

Medical students at VP&S have plethora of options for scientific scholarly activity, including summer programs, taking a year off to conduct research, enrolling in research electives and the Scholarly Projects Program. There is diversity in areas available for scholarly inquiry including basic and translational science, clinical research, global and population health, social and narrative medicine, and medical education. In addition, students may pursue a dual degree earning a MD/MS in Biomedical Sciences, MD/MS in Bioethics, MD/MS in Biomedical Engineering, MD/MS in Biomedical Informatics, MD/MS in Human Nutrition, and MD/MS in Narrative Medicine, MD/MBA, and MD/MPH.

Our aspiration is to train future leaders of academic medicine and we are committed to providing our medical students every opportunity to get the skill sets that they need, contribute to discovery, and diversify their portfolio as they begin their journey to become physician and scientist.
