Educational Scholarship and Leadership
Educational scholarship and leadership may occur in many different settings and may take various forms. This area of focus covers:
- Direct involvement in the process of promoting learning (e.g. lecturing, mentoring, facilitating small groups)
- Support of infrastructure needed for learning (e.g. leading a course, program directorship)
- Development of educational products used for learning (e.g. textbooks, slides, videos, websites, applications)
Educational contributions: The type and magnitude of educational contributions will vary according to the principal academic area(s) of focus of the faculty member, and would be expected to be broader and more robust in foci emphasizing education.

Scholarship: The scholarship of education is about promoting learning through effective application of the sciences of teaching and learning, instructional design, and educational evaluation. Thus, individuals with this focus would be expected to be intensively involved in the three domains of education: direct involvement in the process of promoting learning; support of the infrastructure needed for learning; and/or development of products used by others in learning.
Educational activities are broadly defined as direct teaching of learners at all levels (undergraduate students through continuing education for professionals), research training, mentorship, thesis advising, student and trainee advising, small group teaching, simulation laboratory training, preceptorial clinical or public health teaching, educational program leadership, learner assessment and specific educational training for advancement of students, trainees or health-oriented professionals. Development of curricular material, simulation, web-based tools, educational assessments, and educational materials used beyond CUMC would be also examples of educational scholarship.
Advancement by Rank
At the Assistant Professor level, faculty should demonstrate expertise in and begin to develop strength in educational approaches, infrastructure or content, methods of teaching or novel teaching materials. Such materials may include new curriculum offerings, educational programs, textbooks chapters, syllabi, computer programs, or videotapes that significantly improve the method or quality of instruction in didactic, small group, or clinical settings. Faculty with this area of focus should also participate in programs for professional development such as through training or educational development. Participation in peer-reviewed educational training programs requiring competitive application or completion of a scholarly educational project is highly desirable.
For promotion to Associate Professor, faculty must demonstrate incremental educational activities that are valued by external experts or peer review. Materials may include new curricular offerings, educational programs, textbook chapters, syllabi, computer programs, videotapes or simulation technology that make a unique contribution to the quality and methods of education. These areas or activities may include: regional or national recognition of educational expertise demonstrated by participation and/or leadership in educational societies, invited lectureships and publications related to education, and membership on editorial boards of education focused publications.
Evaluation is required to assess the innovation and success of the educational paradigm, programs, or materials. The impact of educational contributions will be assessed not only quantitatively, but also by the educational activity and the impact/importance of the educational product to CUMC. Thus, educational activities that make important notable internal contributions will be highly considered.
For promotion to professor, faculty must demonstrate leadership in organizations focused on educational guidelines, or policy and practice, or publications in the media related to education. Examples include but are not limited to development of innovative methodologies or materials that have educational influence and impact both regionally, nationally or internationally.
