Commencement

Each May, commencement ceremonies are held at Columbia's Morningside campus and at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Columbia University Commencement

Students assemble on the Morningside campus to be presented for graduation by their school dean to the Columbia University president. Event details are:

  • Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2018
  • Time: 10:15 a.m.
  • Location: The ceremony is held outdoors, rain or shine.
  • Admission: Tickets are required. Three tickets are provided per graduate student.

The commencement registration and ticketing website will be available in late March. The Director of Student Services will email students at that time with instructions from the Commencement Office. Students will need to register to receive tickets to this ceremony.

Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Commencement

Our medical students receive their diplomas, as follows:

  • Date: Wednesday, May 16, 2018
  • Time: 2 p.m.
  • Location: The Armory, 216 Fort Washington Ave., New York, NY 10032
  • Event Details: A reception immediately follows the ceremony. No tickets are required for this event.

At our ceremony, awards are given to graduating students and faculty, and the graduating class presents a distinguished teacher award. Recent commencement speakers have included Eric Kandel, Atul Gawande, Paul Farmer, Roy Vagelos, Jocelyn Elders, and Jerome Groopman. Students again recite the Hippocratic Oath at the culmination of their medical school education.
