Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Programs and Workshops

The Columbia University Irving Medical Center is committed to fostering and enhancing a diverse faculty. The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity & Inclusion at CUIMC offers resources and programs that aim to support the needs of its diverse faculty. It also partners with other offices, including the CUIMC Diversity Deans, Columbia University Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Work/Life, to offer special lectures, professional development programs, resources and networking opportunities. 

Programs

CUIMC Mentorship Series for Diverse Faculty

The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity & Inclusion at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center offers a professional development seminar series designed to address the needs of underrepresented minority faculty at CUIMC. These programs include general career development, career-specific mentoring and general skill-building sessions. 

CV Clinic

The Office of Faculty Professional Development, Diversity & Inclusion sponsors a series of small group meetings for its diverse CUIMC faculty members. During these meetings, faculty have the opportunity to discuss academic career specifics with Dr. Anne Taylor, SrVP for Faculty Affairs and Career Development at CUIMC. The small group setting (a maximum of two to three faculty members per group) allows for more personalized discussion. Personal CVs are reviewed. 

CUIMC Leadership and Management Course for Faculty

The CUIMC Leadership and Management Course for Faculty is a four-day program designed for faculty who currently have leadership/management responsibilities or who wish to include these in their career goals. Participants develop the knowledge and skills necessary for current and future leadership positions in the academic health sciences by utilizing active learning methods, including case studies, discussion and the development of a personal project. Versions of this course are offered specicially for women and diverse faculty.

CUIMC Anti-Racist Educator Institute

The CUIMC Anti-Racist Educator Institute and its associated Community of Practice are designed for CUIMC faculty interested in implementing curricular and pedagogical reforms in diversity, equity and inclusion. The CUIMC Anti-Racist Educator Institute focuses on  confronting bias, systemic racism in academic and healthcare settings, and course design and facilitation strategies to create anti-racist change in learning environments. Participants collaboratively develop pilot school and departmental anti-racist pedagogy training programs.

Group Coaching Program for Women Faculty

This program is designed to help women faculty collaborate and develop strategies to address gender related issues in the workplace irrespective of career path through the use of case studies.

CUIMC Peer Mentorship Series for LGBTQ Faculty

This series provides diverse faculty with general career development, career-specific mentoring and general skill building sessions in a peer-to-peer discussion setting.

Lectures

John Lindenbaum Memorial Lecture Series

Dr. John Lindenbaum was a widely acclaimed hematologist, gifted teacher, great mentor and an integral part of then Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. His interests went well beyond medicine. He cared deeply about societal inequities and injustices and in medicine in particular. Just before his death in June 1997, he bestowed a gift to what is now Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons to establish an annual lecture given by a distinguished diverse scientist. This lecture series has provided the VP&S community with the opportunity to host diverse scientists from all over the country, while honoring his commitment to equality and justice in medicine and society at large.

Columbia Science and Health Equity Lecture Series

This lecture series is part of the recommendations made by the CUIMC Task Force for Addressing Structural Racism and aims to increase the focus on racial/ethnic health disparities and solutions research, as well as training/nurturing future researchers for this work. This series brings together distinguished scientists and scholars from within the Columbia community and from other institutions whose work focuses on key aspects of health inequity.
