6-1 Early and Normal Retirement

Policy

The decision to retire rests solely with the officer and is subject to the following guidelines:

  • Officers may retire after 10 years of full-time service.
  • The minimum age for retirement for officers of instruction is 55. Any retirement before age 65 is considered an early retirement.
  • Officers should inform the department of their intent to retire as far in advance as possible to allow for proper planning and smooth transitions.
  • Officers of instruction who retire at the Professor rank are eligible for the Emeritus designation (see 6-3 Emeritus/Emerita Designation)
  • Retiring officers of instruction may be appointed special lecturers to offer instruction on a part-time basis after their retirement (see 1-1 Appointments)

Requirements

Department submits the following:

  • A PAF with the appointment end date indicated and reflecting the action/reason code RET/EAR for early retirement at an age between 55 and 64 or RET/NOR for retirement at the age of 65 and over
  • Officer’s letter stating intent to retire and effective date of retirement

Workflow

  • The OFA Representative reviews the PAF, officer’s letter of intent, and any additional documentation that the department wants to provide.
  • OFA approves and submits the PAF to CUIMC Payroll.
