1-7 Reciprocal Appointment

Policy

Reciprocal appointments between Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medicine may be for patient care, teaching, research, or any combination and must be clearly delineated in the documentation.

Requirements

Department submits the following a minimum of 60 days in advance of the reciprocal appointment effective date:

  • Letter from both chairs to Deans at Host and Home Institutions requesting the reciprocal appointment and including the title at Home Institution and adding Adjunct as a prefix to the Home title to complete the title for the Host Institution, the anticipated start date, and the officer’s responsibilities
  • Officer’s CV in COAP format
  • A completed Reciprocal Faculty Appointment Application Form signed by the department chairs at Home and Host Institutions
  • A Reciprocal Faculty Appointment Release and Compliance Form signed by the officer
  • Once the two forms are signed, and if rank of Associate Professor or above, the hospital package (COAP/COR packet) provided by the Home Institution

Workflow

Path 1 – Associate Professor rank and above

  • The Home Faculty Affairs Department forwards the chair’s letter, officer’s CV, Reciprocal Faculty Appointment Application Form, Reciprocal Faculty Appointment Release and Compliance Form, and COAP/COR packet to the Host Faculty Affairs Department for review.
  • Once both Faculty Affairs Departments review and approve, they obtain on the Reciprocal Faculty Appointment Application Form the signature of their respective Dean for Clinical Affairs.
  • The OFA Representative notifies the department of the approval.
  • The Host department submits the documentation to OFA.
  • The OFA Representative reviews the dossier and brings the request to the appropriate COAP/COR Committee for review.
  • The OFA Representative notifies the department of the outcome of COAP review.
  • If the reciprocal appointment is approved, the department processes the transaction using TBH or Paper Nomination and according to the usual process for a new appointment at the Host Institution – see 1-1 Appointment of Officers of Instruction and 1-2 Appointment of Officers of Research.
  • The Host department forwards a letter to the individual receiving the reciprocal appointment indicating the effective date and title.

Path 2 – Below the rank of Associate Professor

  • The Home Faculty Affairs Department forwards the documentation to the Host Faculty Affairs Department for review.
  • Once both Faculty Affairs Departments review and approve, they obtain on the Reciprocal Faculty Appointment Application Form the signature of their respective Dean for Clinical Affairs.
  • The OFA Representative notifies the department of the approval.
  • If the reciprocal appointment is approved, the department processes the transaction using TBH or Paper Nomination and according to the usual process for a new appointment – see 1-1 Appointment of Officers of Instruction and 1-2 Appointment of Officers of Research.
  • The Host department forwards a letter to the individual receiving the reciprocal appointment indicating the effective date and title.
