Annual Symposium

From 2017 to 2019 an annual symposium held each fall was a crucial part of the Wu Family China Center's efforts to foster academic and research-based collaborations between VP&S and ZUSM. The symposium offered unprecedented opportunities for faculty members from both institutions to discuss potential collaborations in research and future joint projects.  

Post-COVID, efforts are underway to reconceive the Annual Symposium into a format that will effectively seed collaborations between VP&S and medical research institutes in Greater China.

The last event before the COVID-19 pandemic: Frontiers in Biomedicine 3: 2019 Joint Symposium

 

 

The Wu Family China Center for Health Initiatives held its third annual event Frontiers in Biomedicine 3: 2019 Joint Symposium from October 23rd through October 24th at the New Hotel in Hangzhou, China. The event was attended with 23 speakers and over 90 participants from both Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) and the Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZUSM). David Wu, MD, and his wife, Bernadine Wu, MD, representing the Wu family, also joined the symposium.

The conference began with opening remarks by Xiaoming Li, PhD, executive dean of ZUSM, Yuehai Ke, PhD, associate dean of ZUSM, David Ho, MD, the founding Scientific Director and CEO of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center at The Rockefeller University and incoming Chairman of the Wu Family China Center Faculty Committee (from January 2020), and Michael Yin, MD, associate professor of medicine at VP&S.

During the symposium, speakers from both VP&S and ZUSM delivered remarkable presentations covering a wide range of topics. Dr. Yin also announced that Utpal Pajvani, MD, PhD, associate professor of medicine at VP&S, and Chengfu Xu, MD, associate professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at ZUSM, are the co-recipients of the 2019 pilot program award.

Joint symposia provide unprecedented opportunities for faculty members from both institutions to present on a broad range of biomedical research and explore prospective joint initiatives. The Frontiers in Biomedicine 3: 2019 Joint Symposium was regarded as an enriching and impactful event.
